Hydrogen recombination due to collisions with He and Ar

چکیده
Quantum-mechanical calculations are reported for hydrogen recombination in the presence of a chemically inert spectator. The calculations employ a square integrable Sturmian basis set to provide a discrete representation of the H2 continuum. Direct three-body recombination is approximated by computing transitions from the nonresonant continuum. Resonant and nonresonant states are handled on equal footing within the sequential two-step energy transfer mechanism. Theoretical rate coefficients are computed within the equilibrium and steady-state approximations for the density of intermediate molecules. The results are compared with existing experimental data for He and Ar. The sensitivity of the calculations to pressure variations and to changes in the potential energy surface are investigated for He. The reliability of these calculations and their relevance for astrophysical models are discussed.

Precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy on scales l > 500 will be available in the near future. Successful interpretation of these data is dependent on a detailed understanding of the damping tail and cosmological recombination of both hydrogen and helium. This paper and two companion papers are devoted to a precise calculation of helium recombination. W...
متن کاملFlowing Afterglow Study of Pressure Dependence of Recombination in Helium-Hydrogen Plasma
Recombination of H3 ions with electrons was studied in Flowing Afterglow (FALP) experiment at T = 250 K and buffer gas pressure 1500–1600 Pa. In the experiment dependence of effective recombination rate coefficient (αeff) on He pressure and on partial pressure of hydrogen has been observed. The observed pressure dependences indicate that the recombination process in H3 dominated plasma can at h...
متن کاملDirect excitations of He+ and Li++ ions by collisions with protons or antiprotons
The impact parameter formalism of the single-center close-coupling, first-, and second-order Born approximations have been applied to investigate direct excitations of Helium He+(2s) and Lithium Li++(2s) ions by colliding with protons or antiprotons. The total 3s, 3p, and 3d scaled excitation cross sections are calculated in the scaled impact energy region (2 to 1000 keV). The present work aims...

Effects of chemically-passive fire suppressants on laminar premixed hydrogen flames were investigated by combined use of microgravity experiments and computations. The experiments used a short-drop freefall laboratory facility that provides at least 450 ms of 10 2 g. Near-limit laminar burning velocities were measured for outwardly propagating spherical stoichiometric hydrogen-air flames with v...
